The major conflict is the struggle between life and death for Granny. Granny feels demeaned by her knowledge that Cornelia often humors her to keep peace.

Granny faced rejection, like getting jilted at the alter. Emily then went to the pharmacist for poison, and the town thought she would kill herself.

In this, she wants to have no regrets. So, then she blew out the candle which caused darkness. She does not know the Cantonese of her relatives or her father's Mandarin dialect.
